Trekking in Lapland
The Royal Trail is the best known trail in the mountains stretching from Hemavan in the south to Abisko in the north. It provides excellent hiking and wide diversity of terrain for both the experienced and non-experienced hiker. HEMAVAN - AMMARNÄS This is probably the most suitable section for those visiting Tärnaby/Hemavan. Most of the trail passes through Vindelfjällens Nature Reserve with its impressive landscape and rich wildlife. During winter the trail is popular with snowmobile drivers although it also used by skiers and dogsled teams.
CABINS There are five cabins between Hemavan and Ammarnäs. Run by the Swedish Tourist Authority (STF) they are open for a small fee to travellers. Wood supplies the fuel for heating or cooking. The cabins are open all year and a steward lives there during high season. Brochures are available from the tourist office. Ring 0954 – 104 50 and they will send you a copy. VITERSKAL CABIN The first cabin from Hemavan, distance 10 km. Two bedrooms with 4 to 10 beds. Many excursions can be made from the cabin. You can for example climb the summit of Norra Sytertoppen. SYTER CABIN The second cabin from Hemavan, distance 22km. Larger cabin catering for 22 people is open during high season and the smaller cabin which houses 8 beds is open all year round. It is possible to climb Norra Sytertoppen from heren.
TÄRNASJÖ CABIN Provisions can be bought here during the high season. During the high season the cabin can house 22 but only the small 4-bedded room is open all year round. Reservations for using the wood-fired sauna down by the lake can be made with the cabin steward. SERVES CABIN 22 beds and provisions. A small cabin with 4 beds is open all year round. Lots to see close to the cabin. Just a few hundred meters along the stream Servejukke is a system of small waterfalls. AIGERTS CABIN 18 beds during the high season, 10 beds during low season. Beautifully situated beside a small lake on the tree line. No cooking facilities during low season. AMMARNÄS A picturesque village in the centre of Vindelfjällens Nature Reserve with a population of 230. Most work within tourism, reindeer herding or handicrafts. There is a post office, petrol station and general store. It is the perfect place to stay.
